The Windmill School

School Meals

We are delighted to report that we now have our own school cook on site at our Moxon Street Building, who is making good use of our brand new commercial kitchen!  Pupils will usually eat lunch in the dining hall on the ground floor.

Takako our wonderful school cook and her team understand the sensory overload in dining and catering environments, they also understand autistic individuals may have a really complex experience with food and need a very bespoke approach. Some of the known issues that arise for our pupils include:

• Fear of trying new foods.

• Anxiety around mealtimes which may be because of eating with other people, sitting at a table or eating with particular cutlery.

• Sensory processing difficulties, which can change the way things feel, smell and taste. Certain food textures may cause symptoms of gagging, vomiting or total avoidance.

• Pica (eating non-food items). This can be due to autism itself or nutritional deficiencies in the diet, such as a lack of iron.

Food is freshly cooked every day on our school site. Main courses are always served with a range of salad or vegetable side options, along with fresh fruit or a special Friday dessert.

At Windmill School, we strive to provide healthy and nutritious meals for our students. Our lunch is freshly cooked every day and we run a 3-week menu cycle. Please click on the link below to view the menu.

School meals cost £2.70 per day. View the Autumn 2025 Menu Here!

Please note students usually eat lunch in the dining hall. Students eat a school meal or packed lunch from home together.  We will support any home prepared lunch which may require heating.

Please note Windmill School is a nut-free environment. This means that nuts, including peanuts, tree nuts, and nut products, are not allowed in our kitchen, dining hall or on any other school premises. We kindly request that students do not bring packed lunches which contain nuts or nut products.

If your child has a specific dietary requirement, please contact our school administration to discuss arrangements. If your child has a food allergy or intolerance, please inform us in writing with medical documentation.

We are committed to providing a safe and healthy dining experience for all our students.

You can choose whether your child will have a school dinner or packed lunch and any specific dietary requirements should be noted on the pupil information form in your transition pack. We have a well-equipped kitchen at Moxon Street. Therefore, we aim to support as much as possible with any home prepared food that may need heating.

Pupils can bring a snack for in between lunch. Pupils will also prepare simple snacks and meals as part of their cooking lessons. We ask for a small voluntary contribution towards weekly shop and meal preparation in the food technology classroom.
